Start with the required strength

One of the first points to determine is the required load capacity of the mooring line.

The Ship Design Minimum Breaking Load, or SDMBL, is an important reference within the OCIMF MEG4 guidelines. Based on this value, the correct line strength and configuration can be selected.

Using the correct technical data at this stage is essential. An unsuitable line can affect both safety and performance during mooring operations.

Consider the vessel and winch configuration

The rope also needs to match the existing equipment on board.

Drum capacity, rope diameter, line length and construction all influence whether a rope is suitable for a specific winch. This is especially important when changing from steel wire to synthetic or HMPE ropes.

The vessel’s trading area should also be considered. Temperature, abrasion, weather conditions and frequency of use can all affect rope performance and service life.

Synthetic rope, HMPE or steel wire?

Different rope types offer different characteristics.

Synthetic ropes are often selected because of their lower weight and easier handling. HMPE ropes combine very high strength with low weight, making them suitable for demanding mooring applications.

Steel wire ropes remain widely used for mooring, hoisting and luffing applications where their specific characteristics are required.

There is therefore no single best solution for every vessel. The correct choice depends on the complete operational situation.

Certification matters

Mooring ropes should also meet the applicable industry standards.

TEHO Ropes supplies type approved ropes certified according to OCIMF MEG4 under the supervision of an independent IACS member. Independent certification provides assurance that the rope has been tested and approved according to recognised requirements.

Certification alone, however, does not determine whether a rope is suitable for a specific vessel. Correct selection remains essential.

Look beyond the purchase price

Purchase price is only one part of the decision.

Maintenance, handling, expected service life, replacement intervals and operational efficiency all contribute to the Total Cost of Ownership.

A rope that is more suitable for the application can reduce maintenance requirements, improve handling and support safer operations over its complete service life.
